Volkswagen Ameo Hatchback Review & First Drive

Volkswagen Ameo Overview

Volkswagen Ameo is Volkswagen’s first attempt to enter into the compact sedan segment. The Volkswagen Ameo price in India starts at Rs. 5.24 lakh and goes upto Rs. 7.05 lakh for its top-end variant – Highline. The looks up front are quite similar to the other VW cars. Even when you step inside, the dashboard will remind you of Polo. In terms of comfort, the front seats are as usual perfect even for long drives.

Starting from cruise control to automatic rain-sensing wipers, Volkswagen Ameo 2016 brings with it some features that are introduced for the first time in this segment. Power windows with one touch operation, iPod connectivity, Voice Command and single-fold rear seat backrest are other eye-catching features of the new Volkswagen Ameo. ABS as well as dual-front airbags are a standard across all variants making the Volkwagen Ameo 2016 quite a sensation in its segment.

Volkswagen Ameo Exteriors

Design wise, the Ameo looks almost identical to the Polo, even though it is visibly difficult to detect that the front bumper is actually smaller than the hatchback’s. Coming to its side profile, the new sedan continues to sport the typical Volkswagen sharp and clean shoulder line, which honestly does add a bit of a muscle to its appearance. Apart from this, the Ameo has taken the front grille, headlamps, front windscreen and rear three-quarter window from the Polo.

Coming to the rear, it’s quite obvious that the German car manufacturer has worked overtime to camouflage its boxy boot with innovative design tricks like additional creases and lines. And to our surprise, this actually does work, but if seen from the side profile then the abrupt vertical rise of the C-pillar and chopping of the roofline reveals that Volkswagen almost got the design right, but not quite.

Volkswagen Ameo Interiors

The cabin is pure German—well-appointed dashboard, fine quality plastics, understated and tasteful dual-tone finish. It gets a touchscreen infotainment system that doubles up as a reverse camera display. The central front armrest has inbuilt storage space. One-touch up and down windows with anti-pinch function on all four doors differentiate the Ameo from the rest. The flat-bottom steering wheel has a cruise control function—another first-in-segment. The front seats are very supportive.

The rear seating area gets AC vents, but the space is not best-in-class, even though the front seats have been scooped out for increasing legroom at the rear. The central tunnel eats up foot space. The rear seat can be folded flat fully. Boot space is a decent 330 litres, has a wide loading bay and a flat floor with no intrusions. There are ample storage spaces. Front doors can accommodate big water bottles. At the rear, there is one bottle-holder, smartly located under the rear AC vent—water gets chilled as you switch on the AC. Volkswagen Ameo Gearbox

Volkswagen Ameo specifications include a 1.2-litre MPI engine, which is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. This is available in all the three variants – Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. The diesel powertrain is the 1.5-litre TDI engine that is also mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Along with this, the third offering of new Volkswagen Ameo is a 1.5-litre TDI diesel engine mated to a 7-speed DSG transmission. This automatic transmission is featured only in the Comfortline and Highline variants. The engines are quite smooth and have the punch that you expect from a German carmaker. How these engines fare in the day-to-day life is something that we need to wait and watch out for.

Volkswagen Ameo mileage is around 15 kmpl for petrol when being driven in the city and around 18 kmpl on the highway. The diesel variants should deliver a mileage of around 18 kmpl in the city and that of about 22 kmpl on the highway. The ARAI-claimed Volkswagen Ameo mileage is 17.83 kmpl for the petrol and 24.5 kmpl for the diesel engines.

Volkswagen Ameo Driving

The exact performance figures will come in picture once the car starts to spend some time in the actual driving conditions. Until then, we can expect it to offer a comfortable drive even in tough driving conditions. The ABS is definitely a benefit when it comes to handling of the car. The power steering with tilt and telescopic features further make things easier for the driver. To know more details on Volkswagen Ameo check Getreadyoregon

Volkswagen Ameo Summing Up

The Ameo looks pretty decent but quite similar to other Volkswagen cars, though the sides are rather plain. The rear end of the car lacks some curves that would have given the car a better look. In terms of comfort and interiors, Ameo seems to be very promising. Even in terms of engine and handling, there seems to be a lot of positivity about the car. However, the car needs to perform in regular driving conditions to be able to make a mark for itself in this tough segment that is currently ruled by Maruti, followed by Honda and Hyundai.
