The Volvo’s new-generation product was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year and we’ve just driven it. More to the fore, the Volvo XC60 is expected to go on sale in India towards the end of 2017 at a price around Rs 55-60 lakh. Even at the outset you might think that sounds like quite the price jump – the current Volvo XC60 is Rs 48-52 lakh. Well, let’s reserve judgement and look at the Volvo XC60 in detail first, shall we?

Volvo XC60 Design

Its external appearance is quite decent and is appealing at the same time to any customer, who’s looking for a good looking vehicle. For a stylish image, the roof is mounted with a set of rails, which look stylish and make this crossover much more trendy. The window sill gets chrome decoration for an extra edgy richness for all the doors. Both its outside rear view mirrors can be electrically adjustable, which is an added comfort factor as well. The mirrors have a heating function to them additionally and are retractable as well. The headlamps which are fitted onto the front end are active and are stylish too. The daytime running lights are LED and help better in visibility. The side profile is quite lustrous with pull type door handles and neatly carved out wheel arches, which have been fitted with a set of alloy wheels. The base and mid range trims are integrated with a single exhaust tailpipe and it is further decorated with chrome strips for better look. Whereas, the rear end of the top end D5 Summum is fitted with dual exhaust tailpipes, which have chrome cover to them and this enhances the rear image. Skid plate is fitted to both front and rear end. These protect the bumpers from getting damaged from the road impacts and additionally the front plate safeguards the engine from damage.

Volvo XC60 Cabin

The XC60 shares its cabin design with the XC90 and S90. Will you complain? Absolutely not, because this is one of the finest cabins you could find yourself in. Trimmed in nappa leather and fine wood, and adorned with knurled dials, the cabin looks and feels really plush. Again, the centrepiece of the smart dashboard is the 9.0-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen. The system works with the slickness of an iPad but the screen is a fingerprint magnet. Also, it does take some time to load initially owing to the heavy software it runs but works smoothly once started. The interface gets a bit more colour to reflect the more ‘youthful’ personality of the 60-series cars and the layout has also been tweaked to minimise distractions. Still, we’d have preferred physical buttons for the climate control system; the screen controls aren’t the easiest to use on the move.

You sit at a nice enough height in the XC and visibility is good but you won’t find yourself towering over other road users. In true Volvo fashion, the sculpted front seats offer exemplary comfort. Adjustable for front, side and lumbar bolstering, the seats provide the right support just where you’d want it. The seats’ massage and ventilation functions make proceedings nicer still. Rear seat occupants don’t get as many goodies (and the door aperture isn’t the largest), but the ample leg- and headroom, and large windows give a nice ambience in the back. The rear seat is a bit upright and the squab could have been more supportive but, in general, it is comfortable.

The XC60s for India will come well-equipped with LED headlights, air suspension, a panoramic sunroof, a brilliant 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system, a four-zone climate control and nappa leather seats. Unfortunately, the XC60 makes do with manual steering adjust only.

Volvo XC60 Gearbox

In terms of the engine, the Volvo XC60 is offered with a 2.4 litre 5 cylinder D5 diesel engine which has a twin scroll turbocharger which produces 214 hp of power at 4,000 rpm and 440 Nm of torque from 1,500 rpm to 3,000 rpm. These performance figures are impressive when compared to its segment. The 2.4 litre turbocharged diesel engine is mated to a 6 speed automatic transmission which offers smooth gear changes. This powertrain also has an all wheel drive system which is impressive over rough terrain. Volvo XC60 Braking and SafetyThe Volvo XC60 isis offered with DSTC anti skid system, RSC active stability, distance alert system, collision warning system with Auto Brake, Active Bending lights, ABS with hydraulic brake assist, tyre pressure monitoring system, dual stage airbags, inflatable curtains and pedestrian protectionThe Volvo XC60 is available only in a diesel engine option and the rated mileage of the SUV is 15.38 kmpl which suggests that the car can cover around 800 km before needing to refuel.

Volvo XC60 Driving

The ride quality can feel stiff but there’s no escaping how comfortable the Volvo XC60 feels to drive. The seats are fully adjustable, including the bolsters and well-crafted ride matches up rather well to create a car that feels very cosseting without feeling overtly plush.Handling is direct and pleasing but because of the focus of comfort and the ride quality, you will notice some amount of roll. The XC60 can be pushed very hard around corners if you like but expect the roll to be a companion. It never misbehaves in any way though, so switch to Dynamic mode and have fun.

Volvo XC60 Safety

Standard safety features for all Volvo XC60 models include antilock brakes, traction and stability control, whiplash protection for the front seats, front seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and Volvo On Call emergency telematics. Also standard is Volvo’s City Safety system, which is a low-speed frontal collision warning and mitigation system with automatic braking.

A pair of integrated dual-stage child booster seats are optional and pop up from the rear outboard seats to accommodate children with a height/weight range from 37 inches and 33 pounds to 55 inches and 80 pounds. Other standard and/or available features include a blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, an upgraded frontal collision warning system with fully automatic braking and pedestrian and cyclist detection, a driver-inattention warning system and lane departure warning.

Volvo XC60 Bottomline

If you are looking for a mid-size luxury SUV, we advise you to wait for the Volvo XC60 that launches in India in late 2017. It’s an SUV that prioritises comfort over all else and makes a rather strong case for itself in the process. It is distinctive in appearance, has a soothing cabin and comes loaded with features. It’s also quick when you need it to be but in general, has a calming air about it. In essence, the XC60 is a model that does the important things right. And expect it to be priced keenly too, in the region of Rs 55 lakh.Volvo doesn’t have the largest sales and service setup in India but if that’s not a deal-breaker, the XC60 could be all the mid-size luxury SUV you need.
