Hyundai Tucson Overview
Hyundai has been on a roll in the Indian market. They have a product in almost every segment and most of them are doing really well. The automaker had launched the first generation Tucson in India more than a decade back but the car failed to create a stir in the market. The company has been selling the Creta and Santa Fe SUVs, and to fill the void between them, Hyundai has now launched the third generation Tucson in the Indian market. Hyundai Tucson Design & Look
For the 2016 model year, the Tucson receives a complete redesign, giving the crossover a bolder and more upscale look. Aside from the obvious exterior lighting changes made from Euro- to U.S.-spec, the Tucson unveiled in New York is identical to the one that debuted in Geneva.Up front, Hyundai added in its now-signature hexagonal grille with vertical slats. On top of the new grille, the entire fascia has a more upright look, and the lower apron gains a set of horizontally oriented fog lights and surrounds, which help give the model a wider look. The LED headlights also add to the wider look, and the wing-like lower section of the bumper adds a dab of sportiness.
From the profile, you’ll notice that the A-pillar is pushed rearward compared to the 2015 model. This adds some separation between the hood and the A-pillar, helping to lengthen the look of the hood. Additionally, a sharp, rising accent line shoots rearward from the front wheel arch to eventually meet with the outermost part of the taillight.Around back, slimmer taillights and redesigned tailgate and lower bumper continue the more adult theme of the small SUV.On the whole, Hyundai basically took its small SUV and brought it up to date with the rest of its lineup. Hyundai Tucson Cabin & Comfort
Hyundai is known to deliver some stellar interiors packed with a lot of goodies and gizmos. The Tucson doesn’t disappoint here either, as it is loaded with practically everything one could ask for at the price point. Step inside the cabin of the Tucson and you are welcomed by a pleasant looking beige-black interior. There’s no all-black theme on offer here (like the Elantra) which we think is a miss considering the Tucson positions itself as a ‘dynamic’ SUV.Nonetheless, the layout is contemporary and typically Hyundai. Which means all knobs, switches and dials are exactly where you would want them. The driver’s perch gets a 10-way power adjust, but sadly, there’s no memory function on offer. The leather-clad steering can be adjusted for rake and reach, which makes getting into a commanding driving position rather easy. From the driver’s seat, one gets a nice view of what lays ahead, and the position is definitely confidence inspiring.
The instrument cluster is similar to what we have seen on the all-new Elantra, that sandwiches a detailed multi-information display (that displays trip details, distance to empty and average efficiency) between two large analogue pods for the speedometer and the tachometer. You also get the easy to use (and get used to) 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that is paired with four speakers and a couple of tweeters. Just like the Elantra, this one too is developed in conjunction with Arkayms and offer Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other goodies on the top-spec Tucson includes leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, a chilled glovebox and rear air-conditioning as welOver to the rear, the width of the Tucson makes its presence felt. The result is a genuinely wide bench that can accommodate three abreast easily. In case you do not have the fifth occupant, you can treat yourself to a wide central armrest. The rear bench also reclines that adds to the comfort quotient. The Tucson gets the ‘Smart Tailgate’ feature too, which opens the boot automatically if you stand close to the hatch for a few seconds. Once open, you can liberate more space by either using the 60:40 split on the rear bench or folding them down altogether.Overall, the cabin of the new Tucson is a nice place to be in. Hyundai Tucson Engine & Performance
For the Indian market, the Tucson will get a 2.o-litre VTVT petrol engine which delivers 153bhp of power and 192Nm of torque. There is also a 2.0-litre CRDi diesel engine that delivers a maximum power output of 183bhp and 400Nm of peak torque. It can achieve a top speed of 201 km/h. Bothe these engines are mated to a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic transmission. There is no 4WD option available.The pick of the lot is the 2.0 diesel engine. It has a phenomenal punch and is thrilling to drive. There’s hardly any lag and it pulls away cleanly. The gearbox also responds well. The petrol in comparison is more relaxed. It is is more suited for city driving, whereas the diesel is great on the highways too. Overtaking is a breeze. On the transmission, needless to say that the automatic adds to the comfort factor so it is the one to consider. But if you are a petrolhead who loves manuals, then it is a different matter. Of course it will cost less too.
The Tucson is expected to return 8-9 km/l for the automatic petrol and 12-14 km/l for the manual version. The diesel manual will return around 12km/l and automatic around 10 km/l. Hyundai may also consider getting a hybrid version later sometime. At the moment, there is no clarity on the hybrid version as the company wants to measure the success it will achieve with this new SUV. Hyundai Tucson Driving Dynamics
The Tucson has a high strength steel-intensive monocoque structure and dynamically, it’s quite sedan-like. So the ride quality is pliant and there isn’t much vertical bobbing either. Bad roads and potholes are dealt with effortlessly. Even though it rides on large 18-inch wheels, the large sidewalls keep things civil and it’s planted even at high speeds. The handling’s quite predictable too and it doesn’t feel top heavy, but body roll is noticeable through the corners. Thankfully, the steering, traditionally a weak point with Hyundais, is quite direct and reasonably communicative, but exit a corner too hot and the torque-steer can catch you off guard. With 4 wheel discs, there’s adequate stopping power, but like the Creta, the pedal has to be pressed a fair bit before the brakes bite.
Hyundai Tucson Braking & Safety
Safety is a very strong point. The Tucson offers six airbags, ABS with EBD, hill-hold and hill descent control. There’s also front and rear parking sensors, impact sensing auto door-unlock, a reverse camera, height adjustable front seat belts and a roof-mounted three-point seat belt for the middle passenger at the rear. Another neat feature is the pivot on the rear side seat belts that allows the belt to exit the C pillar at different angles for different sized passengers. Extra thought has gone into making a small recess in the middle seat so the seat belt buckle can be neatly tucked in if not in use. Safety also comes from the body structure which uses 51 percent advanced high strength steels that promise better rigidity, longevity and NVH levels. In 2015, all this helped the Tucson score a five star Euro NCAP rating.
