Hyundai Elite i20 Facelift Review & First Drive

Hyundai Elite i20

Hyundai Elite i20 Overview

Hyundai really set the cat amongst the pigeons with the i20, making it the benchmark premium hatch on key metrics like ride quality and premium cabin feel. The Elite i20 picked up the size and space of the predecessor and pushed up that score even higher with its suave design, excellent material quality in the cabin and sported premium features from a segment above. In fact, the Elite i20 put a lot of pressure on the competition to pull together their act and deliver as much bang for the buyer’s buck as it managed to. Check for SBI car loan.

It is another matter altogether that the i20 Active couldn’t manage to deliver the kind of appeal and the numbers that the Elite i20 managed. In fact, none of the SUV-style versions of premium hatches across brands have managed to really turn the attention towards themselves beyond a point; just goes to show that buyers are clear about what level of change in body style is acceptable to them and what is not!

Maybe that is the reason why Hyundai has been overcautious with the modifications that it decided to make on the Elite i20 facelift (launched at the Auto Expo last month). This is a mid-cycle refresh and though there may have been room for more significant modifications, Hyundai has chosen to keep it subtle. In fact, it is so subtle that when you walk up to the new Elite i20, you may completely miss seeing the changes to the front. There is a chance that some less clued-on fellow road-users may think that this is a unit that has undergone some after-market modifications.

Hyundai Elite i20 Look

Compared to its predecessor, the Elite i20 sports a mature European look that looks sportier and more stylish than ever before. The front design is clutter-free and not as busy looking as some of the other ‘fluidic’ designs that Hyundai have brought in the country. The front looks chic and features swept-back headlamps, a pointy-nose and a low-mounted hexagonal grille with chrome surrounds. The Elite i20 looks much bigger by hatchback standards, thanks to its taut and aggressive bonnet design.

Move on to the sides, and it gets even better. The silhouette of the Elite i20 shows an elongated front end and a rakish rear section. To enhance the side look, the Elite i20 comes with 16-inch diamond cut alloy wheels and blackened C-pillars. Similarly, at the back, the wrap-around tail-lamps are designed to European tastes and they look stunning, especially once the sun goes down! Overall, the Elite i20 is one breathtaking looking hatchback that is going to be a massive hit among Indians irrespective of personal tastes or age.

Hyundai Elite i20 Comfort

On the inside, there is simply no comparison with the older version. Open the door and the first thing that hits is you is the amount of space on offer along with the new dual tone interiors that is a mix of black and beige. The steering seems a lot like the Grand i10 and the Xcent but similarities end here – the Supervision instrumentation cluster is all-new and looks nice. The cental console and the premium looking audio system seems to have been inspired by a particular german car brand. we also love the way the beige fascia wraps over the central air-vents. The climate control sits under the audio system and attention to detail is impressive. There are a lot of cubby holes around and a front arm rest makes adds to the convenience. At the back, space is very impressive and the rear air-con vents are a thoughtful added feature. All in all, the new i20 looks brilliant both from the outside and inside.

In terms of equipment, while new i20 does not get more than 2 airbags or a sunroof, the top end Asta gets features like rear camera with park assist, keyless entry and start-stop, cooled glovebox, front armrest, rear air-con vents, audio system with 8 speakers and 1GB of internal memory, climate control sytem, electric foldable outside mirrors, auto headlamps etc. For more info Hyundai Elite i20 check Iiit-bh

Hyundai Elite i20 Gearbox

Being offered with petrol as well as diesel guises, the hatchback retains its engine options with requisite fuel trims. However, the heavier 1.4 L petrol motor, which used to come with the automatic variant in the previous generation i20, has been phased out from this latest version. The petrol variants house a 1.2 L Kappa dual VTVT engine.

This 1197 cc, 4-cylinder, 16-valve power train develops a power output of 81.8 bhp at 6000 rpm and torque performance of 114 Nm at 4000 rpm. It is paired with the company’s traditional 5-speed manual gearbox. On the other hand, the diesel variants come loaded with a 1.4 L U2 CRDi motor, which is also a 4-cylinder and 16-valve motor. This 1396 cc engine musters out a maximum power of 88.7 bhp at 4000 rpm in accordance with a peak torque of 220 Nm at 1500-2750 rpm. It is coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission to maximize fuel efficiency and performance. So, this time, there is no place for an auto transmission, but the company is hinting at its launch at some later stage.

Despite being touted as a premium hatchback and an elite member of B+ segment of cars in India, the Elite i20’s legacy in this aspect is unmatched. The new Elite i20 offers best-in-class fuel economy with both the power trains. The petrol variants yield a promising fuel economy of 18.60 kmpl while the diesel variants deliver 22.54 kmpl; however, the aforementioned mileage figures are with base (Era) and mid (Magna) variants as the higher end variants offer 18.24 kmpl and 21.76 kmpl in petrol and diesel trims, respectively. All these mileage figures are ARAI Certified under normal conditions and mileage may go down by 4-5 kmpl while driving in heavy city traffic.

Hyundai Elite i20 Riding

It was a weak zone for the phased-out Hyundai i20, and people were hoping that Hyundai pay attention to this aspect and come out with a better option. The Elite i20 comes loaded with a tilt and telescopic steering with a motor-driven (electric) power steering wheel. It is lightweight, which makes it easier to operate, and maneuver the hatch through narrow and congested streets. Hyundai i20 Elite uses McPherson Strut with Coil Spring in the front suspension while the rear suspension features Coupled Torsion Beam Axle with Coil Spring. The diesel engine is mighty powerful as it reaches the 0-100 kmph mark under 14 seconds while clocking a top speed of 165 kmph. The petrol motor is also performance oriented as it achieves the 0-100 kmph barrier in 15 seconds with a top speed of 145 kmph. Request Hyundai Elite i20 Test Drive.

Hyundai Elite i20 Safety

The previous-gen Hyundai i20 was always criticised for its body-roll and nervous handling, especially at high-speeds. With the new Elite i20, Hyundai seems to have addressed to the issue. The Elite i20 has not only matured on dynamic front, but it also feels more poised and its handling more predictable than ever before. Even though the suspension is softly-sprung, the Elite i20 has a compliant on-road behaviour. The steering weighs up nicely as the numbers climb in the speedometer, and feels more connected than earlier. Handling around the bends has always improved vastly. The Elite i20 does not wallow or roll like experienced in the previous models. The straight-line stability is also much much better than before, courtesy a tweaked suspension setup.

While Hyundai has dynamically improved the Elite i20, it has to be added that it still isn’t a corner carver or segment best. The steering feels a little vague and inert in comparison to some of its rivals. In the previous-gen i20, Hyundai used to offer disc brakes on all four wheels. However, in the Elite i20, disc brakes on rear wheels have been given a miss in favour of drum brakes. That said, the braking performance is still top-notch, and it maintains composure no matter how hard you stomp on the brake pedal.Safety kit on the Elite i20 includes ABS, driver and passenger airbags, automatic door unlock in case of an impact etc.

Hyundai Elite i20 Bottomline

Hyundai Elite i20 is quite high on style quotient due to the European touch in the exterior designing, which is definitely benefiting the company. It is said, “First impression is the last impression”; the same holds true in case of cars. What further justifies the association of this proverb with cars, especially with Elite i20, is the fact that it received a thumping response from the customers and registered around 5000 advance bookings in just a week prior to its launch. Under the hood are the same tried and tested engines, but Hyundai’s move on cutting down the safety features still remains an intriguing and mysterious one!

The Hyundai Elite i20 with all these changes surely can compete easily with some of its potential rivals like the Maruti Baleno and the Ford Figo and Volkswagen Polo in the Indian market. The changes to the exterior and interior are limited to cosmetics, but that does not take the light away from the fact that the i20 is considered as one of the bestsellers of the Indian auto market.
